According to requirements, UK law requires all motorbikes on the road to be kept in a roadworthy condition. This is checked by means of an MOT test to ensure that it complies with road safety and environmental standards.
At Motorcycle Magic we perform Class 1 and 2 MOT tests. MOT class one covers all motorcycles and scooters with or without a sidecar fitted up to 200cc. Class 2 covers all Motorcycles with or without a sidecar above 200cc.

The Motorcycle MOT Test
The comprehensive motorcycle MOT looks at some important parts of your motorbike to ensure that they meet the key legal minimum requirements at the time of testing. You should be aware that the MOT certificate is not a guarantee of the general mechanical condition of a vehicle.

What to expect during a motorcycle MOT test ?
At our centre for MOT Testing for Motorcycles in Sidmouth, the tests performed will include both the safety of your vehicle and the level of emissions coming from the exhaust. This is in accordance with DVSA Motorcycle MOT requirements.
Your Motorcycle MOT test will include checks on the following items :
These are some of the important parts of your motorcycle that will be checked in the MOT.
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Registration Plates and frame numbers
- Lights; the headlamp(s), rear lights, indicators and reflectors
- Steering and Suspension; Checks on forks, handlebars, grips mountings, head bearings, swinging arm, shock absorbers and damping effects etc
- Wheels and Tyres; Condition, correct size and type, correct fitment, treads and valves
- Frame; Checked to see that it is safe from cracks and corrosion and possible distortion
- Brakes; Operation, controls and performance
- Exhaust System; Secure and complete, noise levels
- Fuel System; Leaks, security of its components
- Seats; Inspected for presence of a rider’s seat, that any seat is attached securely
- Wheel Alignment; check for the correct alignment of front and rear wheels.
- Sidecars (when fitted); Secure attachments, alignment, suspension, lights and tyres
- Horn; that it works properly it’s suitable for the vehicle
- Drive Chain & Sprocket; Security and condition
- Throttle; Checked for good working order
- Clutch Lever; Inspected for damage and safety
- Footrests; Properly fitted and present
What happens after the motorbike MOT test?
After your MOT test, each part of the test will be graded as either :
- Dangerous: If your motorcycle carries a risk to drivers on the road, or if it is deemed as environmentally unsound – not road legal
- Major: If the condition of your motorcycle could affect other drivers or the environment and therefore the issues need immediate attention/repair.
- Minor: If there is an issue that isn’t a significant risk, but does need to be repaired as soon as possible
- Advisory: If it is seen that an issue could develop in the future – you will be advised to monitor this and act upon it when required
- Pass: If your motorcycle reaches all minimum legal requirements to meet the standards of road safety
If your motorbike passes the MOT test a VT20 ‘pass’ certificate will be issued and your motorbike is considered officially safe to drive in the eyes of the law. In the interests of your safety any items that are not quite a failure, but worth keeping an eye on, are highlighted as ‘advisory’ items.
We endeavour to do our very best to help your motorcycle to grade at the pass level. This is done with some pre MOT advice and reminders to you.
In the event that your bike does not pass, a VT30 document woudl be issued, and we will give you the reasons why your motorbike did not get a pass. We will be able to give you a fair quotation to remedy the issues which are needed for your bike to achieve a pass.
At Motorcycle Magic we offer our customers a free MOT re-test on their motorcycle, if it is completed within 10 days.
